Introductory Guide to Petplay Gear
written by Micah Brown
As we continue our journey down the pet play rabbit hole this month, we’re going to take a trip into the world of Pet Play gear and toys. All pets need mental stimulation through play as well as a good basis for training. How far you go with your pet play is entirely up to you and your partner(s). Our main goal here is to try and provide you with what we believe to be the most helpful tools to make your pet play as satisfying as it can be for you.
If you find something here that isn’t relevant to your pet play, skip ahead, and you may find what you’re looking for.
Gear for Human Kittens and Cats
When it comes to kittens and cats, as you might expect, you will need a plethora of items to keep your mischievous little ball of delight entertained and looking their absolute best. While mentally stimulating toys are important for your pet, it’s also important that those who lean into their feline persona present a confident and aesthetically pleasing demeanor. Those who tend toward the kitten and cat roleplay tend to lean into their vanity.
While collars are very much a staple in the kink community, when it comes to the sorts of collars a feline-type pet player may deem acceptable, they tend to move away from utilitarian and focus more on fashion sense. What collar is going to look best? What color brings out my eyes? Does it have a bell? Should it be cute or mildly threatening? Many pet players will get collars from their local pet store, though when it comes to the aesthetics of a fine collar, they will likely have more luck at a kink-centric shop or even having one custom-made on a site such as Etsy.
When it comes to kittens and cats, it is highly unlikely that they will tolerate a leash well, but you may find you need one from time to time. Again, you can find some good options at your local pet store, but for more kink-specific leashes, you may want to try a kink specialty store or, once again, Etsy.
Cats and kittens, especially kittens, tend to be very playful and need lots of stimulation to keep their minds engaged and curiosity sated. Standard toys you might think of for a cat can work well for those who identify feline, including laser pointers, bells, toy mice, and so forth.
Often, for the feline pet player, appearance is everything. Finding the right look for their pet persona is going to go a long way toward them feeling comfortable and happy simply existing as a pet. The important parts of appearance are going to differ from person to person, but the basics tend to remain the same.
While there is a market for full facial masks that create a more feline appearance, most feline players will lean toward some kind of cat ear head piece that gives the wearer the appearance of having feline ears. Feline pet players may even go so far as to mimic a cat washing their ears when they are in pet space.
Many pet players will want to have a tail as well. What this tail looks like and how it connects to them are going to vary drastically. Some folks will want a tail that connects to their belt and is on the outside of their clothing. Others may want to have a tail that is connected to a butt plug. These tails use the butt plug as an anchor to give the appearance of a naturally occurring tail when the individual is unclothed.
If you’re interested in going toward the butt plug option, just make certain to read all the instructions that come with your plug and try not to leave it in past the total amount of time recommended by the manufacturer or your doctor.
The last piece is going to be footwear, if your pet feline desires it in any form. This goes into the idea of gloves for the hands that mimic the appearance of cat paws and toe beans. Some may want claws on their mittens, others may not. Specialized socks or slippers may also be used for their feet to also give the appearance of paws.
Gear for Human Puppies and Dogs
In terms of gear for dogs and puppies, there is a fair amount of crossover between them and the feline players. Collars and leashes are going to be crucial for canine pet players. Often, the collars of canine pets will be less for looks and more for function. While some will care about their appearance as much as the feline pet players, dogs and puppies are often more utilitarian than their feline counterparts. This may also have to do with the fact that dogs often desire to be cooperative, whereas cats tend to be a little more aloof and don’t often desire to be helpful.
Puppies and dogs are going to be much more attached to you in a more noticeable way, as well. They tend to require more attention with games and toys that are more of a team effort than simply playing on their own. As with actual dogs, canine pet players may enjoy a game of fetch.
Where things may deviate from a feline to a canine is the headgear and footwear. Generally speaking, felines don’t have full facial wear that they put on the way that a canine player may. Feline players don’t often wear muzzles either, which canine players may enjoy – especially if they enjoy biting and their owner is trying to teach them not to. Canine players have a variety of headgear options, ranging from simple ears to full facial options that make them appear more dog-like. These shouldn’t be confused with fur-suits as they do not fully cover the head, nor is the purpose of these the same purpose that a furry may have.
Gear for Human Ponies
Just as in life outside of kink, ponies tend to be the most expensive option for a pet. There are so many options out there for ponies because they tend to be put to use quite often in the scope of their dynamic. Ponies are often used by their owners for various feats of “manual labor.” You may find ponies at a kink convention pulling their owners around in a chariot of some kind. The elaborate headpieces, hooves, tails, bridles, and even saddles are often custom-made and specially fitted. While some options are less expensive and more widely available, those who tend toward pony play are often looking for the best options out there.
When it comes to pony play, a conversation about what is going to be expected from the pony as well as what accoutrements are needed for them to feel at one with their pony persona and for the owner to feel they appropriately representing them as an owned pony when out in public.
There are a number of specialty shops on the internet for Pony Players that cater to the needs of those who enjoy equine play. These sites can also lead you to communities for other ponies and pony owners.
Conclusion
The amount of gear that you need for your pet play to feel successful depends entirely on what is going to work best for your dynamic. If some fuzzy cat ears and tie-on tail make you feel happy and comfortable, then go for it. If you want to feel bound, yet useful, as a pony then it’s likely going to cost you a fair amount more to get up to speed with everything you want to have on hand for your play.
There is no need to get everything at once (or anything at all). Go slowly and get the things that are most necessary for you and your dynamic. Expand from there as you are able and as you desire.
Let your imagination run wild!
You’re all a bunch of very good pets!
